How the Philadelphia nonprofit that could launch the nation's first safe-injection site got started

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein has vowed to pursue legal action against a  safe injection site in Philadelphia. But, in some ways, the political situation in Philadelphia makes it a prime location for a site, Goldfein said. There's Prevention Point, which has decades of harm-reduction experience. A progressive district attorney, Larry Krasner, who supports the idea.  Mayor Kenney, who is keeping mostly silent in public but encouraged Rendell, the former governor wrote in a letter to the Inquirer on Friday.

Eagles Sign Two Players [UPDATE]

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

The Eagles added some offensive line depth.

Josh LeRibeus (USA Today Sports).

Josh LeRibeus (USA Today Sports).

UPDATE: In addition to Josh LeRibeus, the Eagles also signed free agent wide receiver Dom Williams. Williams spent the 2016 season on the Chargers’ practice squad after signing with San Diego as an undrafted free agent. Original story below.

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed yet another player to a reserve/futures contract. This time it’s former Washington Redskins offensive lineman Josh LeRibeus, according to a report from Chris Russell of 106.7 The Fan.

LeRibeus is 27 years old and measures in at 6-3, 312 pounds. He was drafted by Washington in the third round of the 2012 NFL Draft after attending Southern Methodist University.

LeRibeus has logged 12 starts in 28 career games played. He has the versatility to play both center and guard, though most of his experience comes from playing the former.

Washington re-signed LeRibeus to a one-year deal after his rookie contract expired following the 2015 season. He was cut before the 2016 season and has been out of the league since. The Eagles brought LeRibeus to Philadelphia for a workout in October.

With the Eagles, LeRibeus figures to compete for a depth job as a backup offensive lineman. Philadelphia could use more depth considering Stefen Wisniewski is going to be a free agent and might not return.

Including LeRibeus and Williams, the Eagles have now signed 11 players to reserve/future contracts since the 2016 season ended. More information about those players here and here.

On the Market: Unique Contemporary in Fort Washington

For Sale/Rent

This house has an unusual three-wing layout that gives its living room, dining room and master bedroom patios of their own. High vaulted ceilings also abound.

Once again, our search for interesting, distinctive, unusual, outstanding, original, actually unique (no comparative or relative adjectives allowed!) houses for sale takes us up Sheaff Lane in Fort Washington.

This residential roadway seems to be our anti-Main Line. Yes, it has some really grand center-hall Colonials on it. But it also has what must be the largest collection of one-of-a-kind houses in one place in this region. (Like this one. Or this one, whose owner has been trying to sell it for some time now.)

This unique contemporary house for sale is yet another of them. The MLS says it was built in 1964, but I’d place it about a decade or so later.

It has a three-wing layout that produces patios at the end of each wing, and each wing’s sloping roof profile produces interior spaces with soaring vaulted ceilings.

The most dramatic of these, of course, is in the living room, whose stone fireplace forms one-half of a double fireplace whose counterpart graces the patio outside it.

The next most dramatic one covers the first-floor master bedroom, which also has its own patio.

Then there’s the one in the dining room on the first floor of the third wing.

By now, you should have noticed this house’s clean lines. The kitchen has them too: notice the sleek simplicity of the cabinetry. Pressed-tin backsplashes provide a distinctive accent.

And the bathrooms continue this minimalist aesthetic. The master (above) recently got an update that gave it marble tile walls and an oversize glass shower.

Like the other houses on this street, traditional and modern, this house offers privacy thanks to its wooded 2.68-acre lot. Yet it’s convenient to the Fort Washington office park, the Fort Washington Expressway and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which makes this an ideal place to live if you work in either Fort Washington or King of Prussia. If you work in Center City, your best bet is to head to nearby Fort Washington Regional Rail station and let SEPTA do the driving.

Philadelphia to restore shuttered fire companies courtesy of FEMA grants

Posted by [email protected] on Comments comments (0)

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) --

Thanks to nearly 20 million in federal grants, Philadelphia and its fire department are finalizing plans to restore fire companies that had been shut down during the recession.

Plans include restoring Engine 8 at the Ben Franklin Fire House in Old City.

For union officials, this is big news.

"It is big news because with the increase in manpower, our Commissioner indicated he would try to reinstate the companies that were placed out of service a number of years ago when we were back in the recession," said Edward Marks, President of Local 22.

The city says firehouses used never physically closed but during the prior administration, seven fire companies were put out of service. They were: Engine 14 at Foulkrod and Darrah, Engine 6 at Belgrade and Huntingdon, Engine 39 at Ridge and Cinaminson, Engine 1 at Broad and Bainbride, Engine 8 at 4th and Arch, Ladder 11 at 12th and Reed and Ladder 1 at 13th and Parrish.

"One of the main firehouses we're talking about is down in Frankford at Foulkrod and Darrah, Engine 14," said Marks. "It's a densely populated area, and we had a number of fire deaths down in that area since the closing of Engine 14 so that's going to be a big shot in the arm for that neighborhood."

With the grant money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Fire Department expects to begin hiring new firefighters in early 2019.

The Fire Commissioner said this will allow the department to respond more efficiently and safely to all types of emergencies.

They're serving Bellinis, Bloody Marys, and the Breakfast Stack, a signature cutlet-waffle-egg creation, in Fitler Square on weekends.

There’s nothing quite like a crispy, juicy, saucy cutlet — whether chicken, veal, or eggplant. And now, cutlet specialist Cotoletta Fitler Square is serving them for brunch.

The downtown offshoot of chef Beth Amadio’s Best of Philly-winning Bala Cynwyd favorite just rolled out their new brunch menu after opening in the former Tria Fitler Square space at 23rd and Pine back in May.

While the menu includes weekend morning classics like lemon poppyseed pancakes, stuffed challah French toast, and eggs Benedict, it’s the Italian bites that are really exciting.

There’s giambotta, a home-style, fritatta-like egg dish typically made with a mix of cooked vegetables or leftovers; Amadio makes hers with Italian sausage, peppers, onions, and potatoes. There’s also a morning-friendly take on the restaurant’s signature dish, the Stack, made with of chicken cutlet, eggplant, and provolone, and peppers: the Breakfast Stack is a crispy chicken cutlet and a sausage-stuffed long hot pepper sandwiched between Belgian waffles, all topped with a sunny-side-up egg.

Brunch at Cotoletta Fitler Square also includes morning booze like Bellinis and three kinds of Bloody Marys, plus a slate of cutlet and breakfast sandwiches — some favorites from Amadio’s days at her first restaurant, Homemade, in Narberth.

Brunch at Cotoletta Fitler Square is served Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Check out the full menu below (click to embiggen).

Connectivity, Equity, Education, Other Issues at First Suburban Active Transportation Forum

Connectivity, Equity, Education, Other Issues at First Suburban Active Transportation Forum

By Benjamin Harris

With a whole slew of speakers representing Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties, the Pennsylvania Active Transportation Forum was a huge success on Saturday in Norristown. Speakers discussed a wide range of topics including current trial projects, public outreach initiatives, and infrastructure connectivity. Planners and representatives gave updates on trail projects and strategies to improve and expand the suburban cycling infrastructure, and how they’re building walkable and bikeable suburban communities.

Some the overall themes were…

  • Connectivity
  • Equity
  • Safety
  • Education
  • Enforcement
  • Health and Environmental Sustainability
  • Creating Vibrant Economies
  • Levels of Traffic Stress

Local, state and regional officials discussed the future of suburban bike advocacy after the recent modification of the Bicycle Occupancy Permit (BOP), which was a hindrance to bike lane implementation. How the modification of the BOP is changing the future of suburban bike lanes, and many suburban communities have found creative ways to implement bike infrastructure.

With the emergence and growing popularity of E-Bikes and scooters, that was a large topic of conversation. E-Bikes have created an opportunity to open up connectivity and distance barriers that have limited many people from even considering cycling to their destination. Maggie Gendron of Lime, the dock-free bike and scooter rental company, talked about the advantages and challenges of dock-less vehicles, many of them electric, and how their bikes and vehicles are bringing a wider audience that would’ve likely driven instead.

While the cost of an E-bike is a little too high for many riders, some argued that there are plenty of advantages, such as the increased hauling capacity achievable and a great solution for seniors and those who can’t cycle like they used to. E-Bikes are a viable means of transportation for a large group of individuals and families, and are likely to be a substitute or a replacement for a car to many people.

The unique aspect of this forum was that the cycling community could hear from and have their questions answered by those representing a large geographic area, and not just those in their immediate community. It was a great place to learn from what other municipalities have achieved, are working on, and are planning. A sharing of ideas and success stories that could be implemented elsewhere throughout the region.
